The right ultrasound answers a focused question. EVSLA may use duplex imaging to evaluate Venous Insufficiency, Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD), a possible clot or obstruction, or the vessel map needed to plan care.

Venous Insufficiency

When vein valves fail to keep blood moving toward the heart, ultrasound can measure backward flow linked to swelling, heaviness, achiness, skin changes, or varicose veins.

Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD)

Find where narrowed arteries reduce blood flow when leg pain, cramping, or fatigue appears during walking, or when feet feel cold or wounds heal slowly.

Possible clot or obstruction

Check whether a vein compresses normally and whether blood can move through it when a clot or deeper obstruction is a concern.

A treatment or follow-up map

Map vessels before a procedure and check blood flow after treatment when surveillance is part of the care plan.

Vascular ultrasound is the overall exam. Doppler evaluates the direction and speed of blood flow, while duplex combines vessel images with Doppler flow measurements. The terms are often used together.

Depending on the exam, vascular ultrasound can help evaluate narrowed or blocked arteries, blood clots, vein valve dysfunction, blood-flow direction and speed, aneurysms, and vessels before or after treatment.

Many exams take about 30 to 60 minutes, but timing depends on the body area, whether one or both sides are examined, and the questions the study needs to answer.

The exam is noninvasive and is usually painless. Gel is placed on the skin and a handheld probe is moved over the area. You may feel pressure, especially when a vein is gently compressed or when the technologist needs a clear view.
